Luca’s Mid Century Modern Nursery

Everyone has been asking for months to see Luca’s nursery.  We promise we were not trying to hid it!  Some last minute changes were made and we were still finalizing things, so I wanted to wait to share it.  It took a little longer than anticipated, but we are finally finished!  Luca’s mid century modern nursery is definitely a labor of love that MANY people have helped bring to life.

Our den has three white walls and one statement navy wall.  It was my favorite room in the house, decor wise, so I wanted to recreate that same look in the nursery.  (The color Club Navy by Ralph Lauren is a beautiful navy paint if you are looking!)

After my Dad finished painting the room, it was time to decorate!  Overall, the color story we were going for was black, white, navy and grey with gold metal accents.

Side-note: If you know me, you know my insanely abnormal love for Ikea.  Because of that, we have a lot of Ikea furniture in our house.  Our bedroom dressers, is the entire Hemnes collection in white.  When I saw that that collection finally came in grey, I was so excited!  I knew that would be the perfect dresser for Luca’s room.  Of course, I changed the knobs to a gold metal ring to give it a cooler look.

So, once we had the dresser purchased and put together, it felt like we were making a little progress.

Next step: to find a rug.

Ugh!  This was way harder than it should have been and I spent way too much on return shipping fees.  Because we wanted a mid century modern vibe, I really wanted a linear pattern.  The first rug we tried came in with w light blue color instead of Navy, so I didn’t even get a picture of it in the room before I returned it.

The next rug seemed too good to be true for only $50 on Amazon.  It had amazing reviews and looked good in everyone’s pictures, but once it got here, we hated it!  It was just too busy…

Then I stole the rug from the den to see if I wanted a solid rug in the room…I did not.

I wish I could say that the search ended here, but it didn’t.  We went through about 10 rugs before I found the one I loved.  Of course, it was not online and it was literally down the street from my house for only $100.  Tuesday Morning, a little hole in the wall store similar to Homegoods, was my saving grace.  I actually bought it in both colors they had: a black line and a navy line.  Ultimately, I decided on the black line design-which is a good thing since we ended up changing the room colors later on… 😉

You see that sweet floor lamp in the corner?  I forgot to mention that earlier.  Luca’s sweet Uncle Shaffer bought that for him from Target.  I am totally obsessed with it and it perfect for the mid century modern vibe.  RC took a few months of convincing to finally come around to liking it! LOL

This is the point where we hit a little standstill.  We got busy and started focusing on other things besides the nursery.  Then all of a sudden, I was on Pinterest one day and saw a picture of a nursery with GREEN walls.  I almost cried because it was so cute and was so jealous.  Of course, I immediately sent a screenshot to RC and he agreed that he liked that way more than the navy we (I) chose.  Crap…

I sent my Dad a text and very politely asked him to repaint the one navy wall to green.  He told me it was just my hormones and that the blue was fine.  Men…  So I did what any sane woman would do.  I went and bought the green paint and told my Dad it was here waiting for him. 😉

Remember that vacation RC and I went on back in June?  I convinced my Dad that that would be the best time to repaint the room and he finally agreed.

Yessssssss!  It’s so good and we were so happy with the update.  We used Evergreen by Sherwin Williams.

To add another green element to the room, I ordered some green velvet curtains from Amazon.  They came in very long (96 inches) so my sweet Mom hemmed them perfectly for us.  Thanks Mom!

Next Step: buy the crib!

We only really liked a couple options, so thankfully, it didn’t take us long to pick a crib.  We loved the style of the Babyletto Lolly crib and it comes in three colors.  Black, white and grey.  All of which would have looked great in the room honestly.  We decided on white because it would be set on the green wall, and the white would just pop more.

Next step: accessorizing!

Obviously, accessorizing is my favorite thing to do.  I scoured Etsy for a cute name sign for above Luca’s crib.  We loved the idea of the light wood element to tie into the bars on his crib.  I found the shop 1801 & Co, which seemed to have the best price options and font options.  They also have great reviews and it was a super fast turn around time for a custom piece.

Originally, I bought a few other decorative pieces to be hung around his name.  RC and my dad both said they didn’t want such things being hung over the crib, so we had to come up with something else.  His name alone, on the wall, was just sad looking.

I just happened to be at Target, of course, and saw these decorative wood pieces.  One was just a couple inches too short to fit his name on, so we had to buy two to put side by side.

Speaking of Target, I went a little crazy for accessories in his room while shopping there.

I’ve wanted this round gold metal frame mirror for a long time, and it fits perfectly above Luca’s dresser.  The sea urchin wall pieces are what I wanted over the crib…I’m sure you can understand why the boys told me “no”.  But they fit just right next to the mirror on the opposite wall.

For my baby shower, we asked for books instead of greeting cards from each guest.  This meant, I needed somewhere to put all these books!  These wood and metal wall shelves were affordable and look great with the rest of the design elements.

^^My parents found these amazing gold vintage knobs at a resale store for $4!

^^We finally found the perfect rocker/glider.  We literally sat in 1000 different options and went to a 100 different stores.  We really wanted a dark grey or black but black is impossible to find in a cute rocker or recliner.  This one, by DaVinci, was so comfortable and had a simple design but also had the right measurements to fit in the room.  The sweet lady at Buy Buy Baby had to be so sick of us by the time we finally made a decision!
